Formula D Round 6, Las Vegas

Redondo Beach, CA. Las Vegas Motor Speedway played host to Formula DRIFT RD 6 of the 2011 season.
The custom built course is one of the fastest, if not the fastest, drifting circuits in the world. Drivers are pushed to put their fears behind them and risk it all, when entering the first turn with a very high-speed triple entry. Fans will not be disappointed with each grandstand seat having a great view of all the action.

PM Racing persevered into round six, after suffering from engine failure and a late crash in Seattle that put the PM Racing out for round five. PM Racing Crew chief and NuMovementz owner Scott Stanwood, “Our engine and chassis have been refreshed and is ready to rock under the lights of Vegas”.

PM Racing rolled in on Thursday for set up and practice. PM Racing was ready to get back into form, qualify high, and put on a great show. Patrick Mordaunt said, “I’m feeling really good about this weekend and have high expectations for me and my crew.”

Thursday practice went without a hitch. PM Racing tested our initial setup, along with making minor adjustments to tire pressure. The data PM Racing gathered from practice proved beneficial on our setup for the afternoon and night portions for the weekend.

Friday qualifying started in reverse order of 2011 standings. Mordaunt would be in the 10th spot to lay down two non-consecutive qualifying runs. One the first qualifying pass, Mordaunt initialed early, keeping a smooth wide line to the rear clipping zone. He transitioned to the first front clip of the S turns nice and tight. Entering into the second front clip zone Mordaunt made small correction. The judges gave a score of 50. The second qualifying lap ran the same wide smooth sweeping line to the rear clipping zone, transitioned to the front clipping zones cleaner and tighter, and finishing off the run without any mistakes. The judges awarded Mordaunt with a 69.5. That would be good for P18 for top 32 tandem battle. Attached is a link of the second qualifying lap.

2nd Qualifying run

In Top32, we were matched up against Dean Kearney’s Dodge Viper. Kearney’s lead run, Mordaunt allowed Kearney a little gap at initiation, but reeled in the Viper by the rear clip zone, Mordaunt stayed tight with Kearney throughout the rest of the lap. On Mordaunt’s lead lap, Mordaunt’s early initiation with a smooth and fluid drift to the rear clipping zone. Kearney would close the gap. Mordaunt in the front clip zones extended his gap on Kearney in the S turns. The win would go to PM Racing which advanced us to the Top16.

Top 32

In the Top 16, we were matched up against veteran drifter, Rhys Millen in the Genesis coupe. On the chase lap Mordaunt had to make up a sizeable gap from the initiation point and tried to reel in Millen by the rear sweeper. The Genesis coupe maintained the gap giving the advantage to Millen. On Mordaunt’s lead lap Millen, stayed close to PM Racing 350Z for the entire course, awarding the win to Millen.

Top 16

PM Racing finished this round in 12th place overall. “This was good round for us” said, Dave Mordaunt (team owner of PM Racing).

The next event for PM Racing will be Round 7 of the 2011 Formula Drift series in Irwindale, California.
